Season finales

This week is the week where many popular television shows air their much anticipated season finales. "24", Lost , and American Idol are just a few of the shows that are culminating by weeks end. These last episodes are usually packed with excitement and often the viewer is left with some issues needing resolution that will have to wait until next season. For some, that wait can be almost excruciating. What if Jesus was like that? What if He left you hanging at the end of a season, leaving you to wait a few months until you could see what He would do next? What if after the resurrection He didn't leave His followers any promises about what would happen next? How bad would that stink? But Jesus isn't like that. He told us in Matthew 28:20, "Remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age." There was no season finale with a cliffhanger at the end, no exclusive look into next season's episodes. When Jesus ascended into heaven, He didn'...

Jesus isn't "Lost" (at least not completely)

I love the TV show "Lost." No other show on television has captured my attention or had me so anxious to see the next episode. I just started watching the show at the beginning of this season and I have already rented all of last year's episodes to keep up with what's already happened. The unpredictability mixed with what seems like the impossibility of each episode just keeps me coming back for more. This may seem like a stretch to say this, but Jesus is somewhat like the "Lost" show. No, He's not stranded on some mysterious tropical island with all sorts of hatches everywhere and a group of "others" who are out to get Him. Rather, it's the unpredictability and the impossibility of Jesus that makes for a good comparison. Not many in Jesus' day gave Him much credibility when He claimed to be the Messiah and many even discounted the miracles that He performed even when they saw them with their own eyes. And talk about unpredicta...

Hunger

The youth group that I lead sponsors two children through World Vision . These two young boys live in Haiti and Mozambique and the $30 a month that we send helps to provide for their medical care, food, and education. I receive occasional progress reports about them in the mail and they even include drawings that the boys color. Even though I've never met these two young boys, and probably never will, it is very gratifying to know that what little we send to them is making a big difference in their lives. Before I wrote this post I just finished reading through the latest World Vision magazine that came in the mail for summer 2006. In this edition there was an article about the problems of hunger in the African nations of Niger and Angola. The writer spent time in Niger and documented the stories of two young girls who were suffering from hunger and malnutrition. One of the girls was only 2 years old but she had been able to receive medical treatment in time to combat the eff...
