Truth is...

Do you believe in absolute truth? What I mean is, do you believe that God has established a set standard of right and wrong in this world? Many would say that such a standard is unrealistic because truth has many different sides to it. But can that be true? Can truth be true for one person and not another? Would that still make it true? A common example of this truth question can be seen in the studies on safe sex. Those who favor abstinence-only sex education argue that abstinence is the only sure-fire method to use if one wants to prevent unwanted pregnancies and the transmission of STD's and HIV. That statement is 100% true. If you don't have sex, then you won't get pregnant or infected with a disease. Yet when this issue is brought up, many will say that this approach is unrealistic and just simply can't be followed. People are going to follow their impulses, they will say, and therefore it is highly unrealistic to expect someone to abstain when the situat...

Is this offensive...or true?

There's a music artist that I used to listen to a lot in the past but haven't so much anymore. I'm not sure why. I like his music but I just haven't "gotten into it" like I used to. The artist's name is David Wilcox and he's more of a storyteller than a musician (although he is an unbelievably talented guitarist). On several of his earlier albums there many references to Jesus and to faith. I have seen him in concert a couple of times and he never really addresses his faith (or lack of it) but you sense that he has a good grasp of who Jesus is - or at least His teachings - and that there is a God who is sovereign. Out of curiosity I visited his website today to refresh myself on his music. He has released a lot of albums over the last several years and I had the opportunity while doing my work to listen to some of his songs in the background. One song in particular made me stop in my tracks and listen. It is a song called "Good Man" fr...

Samples

I went to the Dixie Classic Fair in Winston-Salem the last couple of days for one reason and one reason only: the food. I love the food at the fair. I honesty don't care how unhealthy it is or how high priced. Where else can you get a giant smoked turkey leg, elephant ear, London broil sandwich, and chocolate covered frozen banana without having to walk more than 100 feet? If I could change anything about the food at the fair it would be to require the vendors to make 50 cent samples available. I would love to walk up, drop my two quarters, and have a nice-sized sample of several different foods. I usually fill up on a large sandwich and don't have room in my belly for anything more, but my nose and eyes are digging the rest of the food selection. But if samples were available, I could troll the fairgrounds eating at my leisure. That way I wouldn't fill up all at one time and I could finally see what some of the other food tastes like. I think I'll bring this up...

Just thinkin'

It's right at midnight and I should be in the bed sound asleep, but whenever my wife works nights I have trouble falling asleep. So, I usually sit at the computer and search all of my sports and news sites until I've learned everything there is to know about football and international affairs. I've also been thinking a lot about religion and "church stuff" lately and have raised a few personal questions as well as come to a few conclusions. You won't find these in theology books and they aren't exactly life-changing, but they do make you think (at least I thought about them): Why do people say that they are trying to find God? Is He lost? Do people who insist on organ music in their church services listen to organ music in their cars? I'm pretty sure Jesus didn't listen to organ music. I have an easier time falling asleep sitting straight up on a hard church pew than I do in my own bed. Most of the pictures depicting Jesus on stained glass wind...
