Perhaps the greatest thing that has ever been or ever will be created by man is the buffet. Not all buffets are created equal. Some are nothing more than just leftover bins for restaurants to dump their extra food. But then there are buffets like the ones at sushi restaurants where they make it right in front of you and put it on display. Indian restaurants have great buffets as well, giving you the opportunity to try several different dishes instead of settling on just one from the menu. Seafood restaurants on the coast can be hit or miss, but when you find that high quality buffet then it's nonstop shrimp, flounder, oyster, crabs, and hush puppies until you literally want to vomit.
Modern man may have created the restaurant buffet but Jesus invented the original buffet feast. In John 6, Jesus is addressing part of "the crowd" of 5,000 that He had previously fed on the other side of the Sea of Galilee. They are back for more signs and more food and are questioning Jesus on when He's going to deliver. He counters with an explanation that, while He was more than happy to fill their bellies with fish and bread, He is actually a far greater meal for them than anything they could stick with a fork. In John 6:57 Jesus tells them, "the one who feeds on Me will live because of Me." That's right, enjoy your Jesus buffet.
Many people turned away from Jesus at that point because they misunderstood His theological language for cannibalism. But Jesus is pretty clear here not just to them but to us. If you want life, then your local restaurant doesn't have the answer. Instead, feast on Jesus, who's body and blood is what truly satisfies. It begins with believing that Jesus is who He said He was: The way, the truth, the life, the only way to know God. And then it requires constant visits back to the buffet line to feed on Him so that you can grow as a disciple and as an image bearer of God. Are you hungry?
